So, I installed a PCI disk-controller card temporarily, and connected the non-Dell drive to it. I have a legitimate Windows XP Home disk, and I've set up a 40GB partition on the 250 GB SATA drive as instructed above. Had many problems with the XP install, though mostly not related to already installing Vista.
